Description
This Web Design case study documents the comprehensive redesign and front-end optimization of the digital platform for the School Museum at I.E. Hector Abad Gomez (“Un mundo de murales, no de muros”). As a core designer and technical developer on the project, I collaborated on transforming an outdated earlier version of the website into a vibrant digital experience. Our team translated the physical artistic legacy of 37 community murals located directly within the school grounds into an intuitive, accessible web interface centered on local heritage, historical memory, and civic learning.
To ground our strategy in real-world context, our team visited the school premises directly to evaluate how the physical museum integrates with the learning environment. This field research allowed us to analyze how students and visitors interact with the murals in person, identifying critical bottlenecks in the previous site layout. By bridging physical site observations with digital UI UX strategy, we established a clear roadmap to restructure the platform, improve navigation flow, and make community history engaging for every visitor.
Redesigning the Digital Experience and Structural Architecture
The original website lacked visual hierarchy and made navigating the museum collection frustrating. To solve this, our team executed major structural changes across the entire platform, overhauling the site layout, color schemes, and typography choices to reflect the vibrant identity of the Niquitao neighborhood. According to research on digital learning frameworks from the Interaction Design Foundation, structuring interactive educational content within intuitive web layouts significantly improves user engagement and information retention in academic settings.
Beyond the core website, our project expanded into a holistic branding effort to elevate the museum presence across multiple touchpoints. Our team fabricated a brand-new logo, established a refreshed visual identity, and created custom Instagram post templates to drive community outreach. As part of this promotional strategy, I participated directly as a video maker for social media, producing short-form video content that captured the essence of the physical murals, celebrating local Culture while directing online traffic to the main site.
Gamification, Interactive Features, and Media Content
To make visiting the digital museum an active learning experience rather than a static reading exercise, we introduced gamified elements directly into the online layout. We designed and built an interactive trivia minigame where users test their knowledge about the 37 murals, regional history, and human rights topics as they explore the digital rooms.
The platform seamlessly integrates multiple interactive touchpoints built for the school community:
-
Restructured Mural Rooms: Reorganized digital galleries that display all 37 physical murals with improved visual clarity and contextual historical data.
-
Interactive Trivia Minigame: A custom digital game designed to boost student participation and reinforce Education through immediate visual feedback loops.
-
Audio Gallery for Community Stories: Dedicated soundscapes and oral histories recording local voices, neighborhood leaders, and artists.
-
Custom Mascot Guide (“Niqui”): An illustrative guide character integrated across user onboarding flows to guide younger students through interactive modules.
Prototyping, Usability Testing, and Final Implementation
During the Prototyping phase, we focused heavily on testing user flows for both desktop and mobile devices. We iterated on interactive wireframes to ensure that switching between the trivia minigame, mural galleries, and community audio stories felt fluid and effortless. Every interface element was tested to ensure fast loading times and clear readability, ensuring that students and teachers can access educational resources during classroom sessions without technical friction.
Redesigning the Hector Abad Gomez School Museum platform demonstrated how practical interface principles and multimedia storytelling can preserve regional heritage while supporting modern learning models. By combining physical site research, structural interface redesigns, social media video production, and user testing, our team delivered a complete digital solution that honors local history.
