Description
This 3D open-world videogame case study documents the visual direction, technical pipeline, and creative execution for Lapü: El Espíritu de los Sueños, an interactive entry within the broader Tejesueños transmedia universe. The universe as a whole was recognized with Los Premios Huella in 2025 as one of the best projects of the year in the Faculty of Communication at Universidad de Medellín, this third-person title is deeply inspired by Wayuu culture and sacred stories.
Players embody Malia, a Wayuu woman gifted by the spirit of dreams to seamlessly switch between the arid reality of La Guajira and a surreal, spirit-infused dream dimension. The core gameplay integrates real-time healing combat mechanics using traditional musical instruments such as the flauta and tambor to purify corruption spread by Wanülu, alongside quest systems across ancestral clans and complex spiritual dungeon exploration.
As the Art Director and Lead Character Designer, I led the overall visual identity, overseeing 2D concept art, 3D character models, props, and environmental assets. The game takes its name from Lapü, the Wayuu concept for “dream.” In Wayuu culture, dreams are deeply important as a vital part of everyday reality, serving as a living space for ancestral guidance, community warnings, and cultural memory.
For game adaptation purposes, we represented Lapü as an alternate realm to create a compelling gameplay mechanic. To honor its true significance, our team immersed ourselves in traditional oral histories and the real-world role of dreams in daily life. Collaborating with Wayuu educator Valkis Bernier as our cultural validator allowed us to translate these concepts respectfully while maintaining visual depth.
Art Direction and Conceptual Worldbuilding
Establishing an authentic visual identity required balancing historical accuracy with stylized digital aesthetics. To guide the creative pipeline, I defined a clear Art Direction centered on color palettes inspired by desert sunsets, spiritual dreamscapes, sacred weaving motifs, and traditional textiles. Embedding indigenous symbolism within interactive visual frameworks allowed us to create a deeply immersive experience, enhancing emotional engagement and cultural connection for players as they explore the world.
During this initial phase, I established an AI-assisted 3D workflow using Meshy AI for rapid character prototyping, ensuring every visual element, from clan totems to desert environments, honored cultural authenticity while remaining optimized for Unity. Beyond character assets, our visual strategy focused heavily on ambient storytelling, lighting setups, terrain layouts, and architectural motifs. By maintaining clear artistic guidelines across the entire team, we ensured that every digital asset contributed directly to the overarching narrative world.
Interactive Gameplay and Transmedia Architecture
To transform passive listeners into active players, Lapü distributes its narrative across connected mechanics within the broader Tejesueños Transmedia Universe:
-
Dual World Exploration: Environment assets designed for switching seamlessly between La Guajira deserts and surreal dream realms.
-
Rhythmic Combat Mechanics: Interactive gameplay featuring traditional flauta and tambor instruments used to heal corrupt areas.
-
Clan Questing System: Narrative quest nodes and character interactions distributed across ancestral Wayuu territories.
-
Spiritual Dungeon Environments: Complex 3D level designs filled with cultural puzzles and guardian entities.
Prototyping, Usability Testing, and Technical Implementation
During the Prototyping phase, my role focused on steering the visual pipeline to align with complex technical mechanics, including custom shaders for world-switching and motion-capture animation pipelines. We iterated on interactive builds and user interface layouts to ensure that switching between the physical realm and dream dimensions felt fluid, responsive, and visually coherent. Every visual asset was optimized through LOD management and texture compression to guarantee fast loading speeds and high performance in Unity across target platforms.
Thoughtful media development can create products like Lapü that genuinely represent and preserve Colombian culture in modern media without losing its authenticity. Bringing this visual package together took a balanced approach, combining field research and AI-assisted character workflows with environment modeling, motion capture, and hands-on user testing to build a game that honors local history.
