Description
Tejesueños is an award-winning transmedia universe created to preserve, celebrate, and reframe Wayuu culture through modern digital mediums, recognized with the Premios Huella in 2025 as one of the best projects of the year in the Faculty of Communication at Universidad de Medellín. As a core designer and digital creator on the project, I participated across multiple foundational stages, ranging from initial worldbuilding and visual design to animation production. Our team translated the rich spiritual heritage, ancestral symbolism, and environmental connections of La Guajira into an expansive narrative ecosystem designed to foster meaningful cultural engagement.
Building a cohesive transmedia universe required deep conceptual research into Wayuu cosmogony. During the early phases of the project, I contributed directly to researching ancestral myths, spiritual figures like Maleiwa and Pulowi, and the cultural significance of dreams (Lapü). To ensure our narrative world remained respectful and authentic, our team collaborated closely with Wayuu educator Valkis Bernier, who served as our cultural validator throughout the development process.
Building the Transmedia Bible and Narrative Lore
Establishing a unified worldbuilding strategy required documenting every creative rule, character backstory, and environmental setting within a comprehensive project framework. I assisted in building the transmedia bible, defining the structural rules that guide how different digital experiences connect with one another. Structuring cultural narratives across immersive digital formats significantly improves audience engagement and learning retention in civic Education.
During this initial phase, I also helped construct the foundational versions of the Mythos. We mapped out ancestral timelines, spiritual dimensions, and conflict arcs to ensure that every individual product contributed meaningfully to the overarching lore. By establishing clear creative guidelines early on, our team ensured that video games, animations, VR modules, and audio stories could expand independently while maintaining total thematic harmony.
Visual Illustration and Animation Development
Translating oral traditions into visual art required developing a distinct aesthetic style that reflects regional symbolism without reducing sacred concepts to mere decoration. As an illustrator, I created visual assets for El Telar Universal along with additional thematic artwork used across our digital channels. These illustrations captured ancestral weaving patterns, symbolic fauna, and desert landscapes, providing a strong visual bridge between traditional heritage and contemporary media.
In addition to static illustration work, I directed and animated El Primer Telar, one of the central animated short films within the ecosystem. This animation visualizes traditional origin stories, bringing ancestral weaving stories to life through dynamic motion design. Similar to regional initiatives like El Buen Vivir Project, our effort leverages digital platforms to amplify indigenous perspectives. Our team produced digital assets and social content designed to share these visual narratives with younger digital audiences.
Interactive Products and Transmedia Architecture
To transform passive readers into active explorers, Tejesueños distributes its narrative across 7 specialized interactive products:
-
Shiliwala: An interactive video game allowing players to explore clan dynamics, character relationships, and cultural conflicts through engaging gameplay.
-
Lapü: A featured video game focused on the spirit of dreams, guiding players through the spiritual dimensions and sacred symbolism of Wayuu cosmogony.
-
Achonwaa: A virtual reality experience designed to immerse users directly within sacred cultural spaces through interactive 3D environments.
-
El Primer Telar: An animated short film illustrating the foundational origin myth of weaving traditions and ancestral knowledge.
-
Origen del Todo: A visual animated short exploring the creation legends, spiritual entities, and primordial stories of the region.
-
Orígenes: A series of audio micro-stories crafted to preserve oral traditions, community voices, and traditional soundscapes.
-
Alijuna: A collection of written short narratives detailing historical encounters, colonization periods, and cultural resistance.
Testing, Usability, and Final Implementation
During the Prototyping phase, our team focused on testing user flows across interactive web interfaces and digital platforms. We iterated on wireframes and layout structures to ensure that switching between animated films, interactive games, and community soundscapes felt fluid and intuitive. Every interface element was evaluated to guarantee fast loading speeds and accessible navigation, ensuring that students and educators can explore the content seamlessly.
Working on Tejesueños showed me how modern media and storytelling can actively keep regional culture alive in digital spaces without losing its roots. Bringing this project together required a bit of everything, from deep research and transmedia documentation to character illustration, animation, and hands-on user testing, resulting in a cohesive multi-platform initiative that honors historical memory through practical design.
